The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) welcomes you to a conversation on leadership and human security in times of war, bringing together leaders representing a wide range of experiences.
Facing record military expenditure, widening geopolitical divides and more armed conflicts than at any time since World War II, the world finds itself in a state of profound tension. Conflicts directly affect as many as one in eight people around the globe, causing deep human suffering and enduring scars to societies. Amid breaches of international law, protracted violence and deepening polarisation, disinformation and entrenched politics, diplomacy is struggling to remain effective.
A people-centred approach to security offers a path to upholding our collective responsibility for peace, the protection of civilians and the prevention of conflict. Human security should be revisited as a guiding framework to address systemic challenges and shift the focus from crisis response to prevention, resilience and long-term solutions. In today’s interconnected security landscape, no actor, sector or community can do it alone. There is now more than ever a need to embrace new ideas and forge new partnerships, moving beyond silos and outdated approaches.
